Crib bumpers have recently been in the headlines as discussions arose surrounding their safety. A crib bumper is a padded piece of fabric that wraps around the inside edge of a baby's crib. The point of the bumper is to protect a baby from the hard rails surrounding the crib, however the bumpers have been scrutinized for causing babies to suffocate.
In the past the American Academy of Pediatrics has told parents that crib bumpers should be firm and thin with good air flow rather than designed like a pillow that wraps around the cribs inside. It is the pillow-like design that leads to the greatest risk for suffocation.

A more recent recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics tells parents that they shouldn't be using crib bumpers at all. This means that pediatricians will begin advising their patients against the use of bumpers as well. Strangulation and suffocation risks are just too great for babies who sleep in cribs with crib bumpers.
It is the hope of these new guidelines that it will reduce the number of babies that die from sudden infant death syndrome, SIDS.
The Academy has reported that SIDS deaths have declined in the past 20 years. Despite this good news other deaths occurring in sleep because of asphyxia, suffocating and becoming trapped have increased. In an effort to decrease the number of infant deaths they have introduced the "ABC's of Safe Sleep".
A - Alone - In order to reduce sleeping accidents like accidental suffocation it is recommended that parents do not sleep with their children. A habit called "co-sleeping." Sleeping alone is safest for babies.
B - Back - Putting a baby to sleep on their back was once feared by parents. They were concerned that they might spit up and choke in their sleep. However it has since been proven that sleeping on their back is the safest for babies.
C - Crib - It can be tempting to put your baby to bed in a swing, car seat or baby pillow but experts have found that the safest place for a baby to sleep is in a crib. Crib mattresses should be firm and the crib should be free of blankets and toys that could potentially be a risk.
Infants lack control of their heads and bodies that would be necessary to move them out of a dangerous position during sleep. These guidelines help set safe sleep routines at an early age and decrease the risk of SIDS in today's babies.
